Fully Functional
Long Island, New York, residents Michael and Carole Sino love spending weekends in Chatham, a picturesque seaside Cape Cod town.

Above the fireplace, a framed map of the Cape and a whimsical sculpture pay tribute to the location. Opposite the fireplace, the partial wall separates the sleeping area from the living room, and provides privacy while maintaining the airy vibe. Installing shelves across the window increased the kitchenette’s storage without blocking the view. The open space includes the living room, kitchen an eating area. A long narrow console fills a niche to the right of the fireplace and below the window. An antique Oriental rug helps delineate the living space and adds a pop of rich color to the soft palette. The front door opens right into the living area and heralds the cottage blue color accents. Glass backsplash tiles, a new vanity, a round mirror––that recalls a porthole, make thermal bathroom pretty and comfortable. In the sleeping space the Sinos gained storage without sacrificing inches with a platform bed fitted with cubbies. A deep plate rail and hooks add architecture, plus display space for basket storage and favorite finds. White cabinets and counters complement the classic cottage style and help make the little home feel more spacious. Drawers and cubbies keep linens, board games and books organized and easy to grab. A vignette of driftwood, beach tone and glass float underscore the mariner theme.

Raspberry shades brighten both the dining room wall and kitchen floor for design continuity. Color and whimsy liven up a weathered vintage table. A shell covered chandelier pays tribute to the coastal location. In a small home, everything must feed a need but that doesn’t mean they can’t also be pretty, like these colorful enamel dishes or brightly color glassware.
