Artist in Residence
Noted tatie designer Jennifer Paganelli turns the rooms of her Connecticut farmhouse into sweet, sensational eye candy!

Textile designer Jennifer Paganelli and her best friend. Playful accents join fabrics in pumped up pastels. Sunny yellow walls wrap it all up. To top off a curvy French headboard, Jennifer created a garden inspired canopy by hanging a double-sided fabric panel over a ceiling mounted, 18-inch pole. Jennifer and her daughter Katie. Much of the home’s art is by Pennsylvania German folk artist Barbara Strawser. Her art enhances watercolors that blend with— and sometimes inspire—a room’s palette. Five years after they moved in, Jennifer and Peter renovated to open up the cramped kitchen. Jennifer works with colors three have a similar energy level––the same brightness. Jennifer serves up less eye-popping pattern in the dining room so that her favorite collection— watery blue glassware— can steal the scene. In vases and on textiles, flowers grace Jennifer's rooms. White walls and trim, along with white lacquered vintage furniture, set the stage for fabrics with classic motifs and saturated color. Patterns and colors unite harmoniously. Blue accessories steal the scene. The guest bedroom is also a room for experimenting with fabric combinations and sometimes for photographing Jennifer’s books and projects.

A Place in the Country
A dramatic mix of remnants from the past and modern pieces brings a renewed beauty and energy to a vintage Virginia farmhouse.

A versatile old hospital stainless-steel rolling cart is used as an extra set of shelves for practical access to everyday items. Weathered pewter dishes add a timeless vibe. An ample antique tub, a linen-clad bench and an oversize mirror set the bathroom elegant mood. In the den, wool throw, raw linen, and a woven rug bring cozy, tactile accents to the den’s sofa and chair.
A classic dresser paired with vintage mirror evokes a Scandinavian influence. The family-style kitchen was created by joining two rooms together. The island, and old oak counter from Belgium, provides a subtle separation between the cooking and dining areas. A cherub statue, fabric roses and a glittering head form set a romantic vignette on an old metal cabinet in the bedroom. Wooden pegs attached to a board of similar finish make a classy and efficient towel rack. A graphic farm sign makes a strategic focal point. Vintage chairs are elegantly clad in prized French fabric. Elegant mercury candle holders balance more rustic elements. Neatly stacked and contained bath essentials are
kept handy in an open metal shelf. Stained to deep brown, the stately, ancient French shutters flanking the fireplace were repurposed as doors to conceal new closets. Painting the inside of the built-in niche a charcoal gray puts the focus on an ever-changing display of favorite objects

Phoenix Rising
An abandoned Arizona home takes flight with mid-century modern furnishings and a major makeover.

Keeping faithful to the mid-century mantra of creating beauty from
an amalgam of things you love, the couple chose a centuries-old French pastry counter as the kitchen’s focal point. Prized possessions line built in shelves that frame a window niche. The copper fireplace flue panel was “aged” to contrast with new earthy mosaic tiles. Attributed to pioneering modernist designer Harvey Probber, the round inlay coffee table acts as a stage for cobalt blue candlesticks and a Bitossi bowl. A circa 193he table is customer made. The vintage Compass dining chairs by Alan Gould were redone with leather seats A vintage yellow vase filled with flowers in the same color family adds a cheerful note. A leather armchair is accentuated with a colorful pillow with a geometric pattern. The bedroom’s décor—which includes items culled from Modern Manor, as well as estate sale and Craigslist, trends toward cheerful tones. The remodeled bathroom's focal point is a freestanding bathtub adjacent to the glassed-in shower To make items pop, the walls were painted blue. Ryan and Kylie share a quiet moment in the garden with their two boys, Sawyer and River, and their Yorkshire terrier, Ollie. The kitchen walls are wallows with beveled subway tiles. A recess niche above the farmhouse sink features patterned tiles and a ledge.

French Finesse
When Kathy and Doug McCabe left a large home in a Dallas, Texas, gated community for a small cottage in the historic district of McKinney, both life and style changed.

The foyer is home to an antique French cherub, a vintage mirror and metal table. The delicate blue and white wallpaper heralds the color palette of the interior of the home. Because there’s very little pattern in the rest of the house, a room full of pattern is a pleasant surprise. In quintessential French style, black and white toile adds cottage character suited to the attic space without detracting from the home’s calming neutrality. In the guest bedroom, Kathy displays favorite vintage items like old French books united by their faded pink covers. Kathy mixes wood pieces in a variety of natural finishes with metal ones that show a little age, and then ties everything together with a color scheme of gentle whites, dove gray and pale blue. Once a detached one-car garage, this charming space is now an extra entertaining area. A built-in buffet keeps necessities at hand, plus its top surface acts as a serving and pass-through space when the bifold windows are opened to the outdoors. Details matter to Kathy who prefers to show off fresh cut blooms in unique containers, like in this antique French pot. Kathy painted the nursery a rich buttercream for a warm color shift from other rooms, making it feel separate somehow, like a destination. An old wicker rocker and pillows made of vintage linens are timeless classics. A stone planter and birds bring a bit of the garden to the dining room table. Clever detailing—such as the pedestal “legs” that flank the range—gives built-ins the look of separate furniture pieces. This unfitted look brings a Euro-country sensibility to a kitchen. The symmetrical arrangement flanks the elegant fireplace and is anchored by a simple yet ample coffee table, which doesn’t visually weigh down the scheme. An open kitchen can mean lost wall space for cupboards and appliances. But Kathy creatively repurposed a long, narrow sideboard that was originally open to the lower shelf but now has a center section with warming drawers. The living room accommodates two sofas and lots of guests. The muted palette and well-chosen accessories contribute to the cottage’s classic French country look. To balance the formality of the chairs and install a relaxed feel, Kathy uses a bench outfitted with cushy pillows on one side of the table. The soothing grey and white palette gets a little dash of color from the green and white napkins and plates

On the Waterfront
It is said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and this holds true where Nikki and Jeff Labelle's home is concerned.

Borrowing space from a former balcony and enclosing it provided room for a stand-alone tub and an additional dressing area. Marble floors add a touch of luxury and a spa-like mood. Coral appeals to Nikki for its cultural form and natural beauty. Nikki's penchant for antiques carries into the master bedroom where a vintage mirror was constructed from a salvage frame. The piece rustic finish is balanced by feminine bed linens and a romantic chandelier with aqua pendants. Filled with an orchid, starfish and sand dollars, a ceramic container makes a a cultural centerpiece anywhere it is placed. Star fish and sand dollars gathered into a large shell act a works of art while echoing the near-by sandy beach and the Gulf of Mexico. Shells and books about the coast keep the cottage location in focus throughout the spaces. Overlooking the Intercoastal waterways the eating area off the kitchen is the family's favorite spot to share their daily meals. Nikki had the cabinets built-in, and she painted the back a soft sky blue to recall the near-by waters and allow her white dishes to stand out. Star fish displayed in a blue vintage scale evoke the waterside location. A long wooden bench makes a perfect spot for keeping straw hats handy for walks on the beach. Frames made from recycle wood boards hold favorite family photos. Outfitted with comfortable sofas and chairs, the family room doubles as a reading room. A vintage armoire conceals the T.V in style. The French doors open onto a loggia, the pool and the view of the bay. Whether on their own or on place mats, shells and varied shades of blue and aqua are reoccurring motifs in the waterside cottage. In keeping with the home's main color accent, an aqua chandelier takes center stage above the dining room table. In the family room, a wall of windows and double doors allows a the view of the back of the home and the bay beyond.
