French Country Cottage
A Florida cottage sums up the chemistry of French style by mixing rustic charm and a dash of panache with confidence.

A simple vignette of favorite items celebrates French country style. The glass doors of the original cabinets are tacked with lacy panels for a feminine look that also hides clutter. Painted a metallic blue, a kitchen chair becomes an eye-catching focal point. The iron bed frame has been repainted numerous times, based on the mood of the moment.A vintage eiderdown makes a comfy spot for Minou, the house kitty. Beadboard brings a touch of farmhouse style to the dining room. A French sofa keeps company to an old farmhouse coffee table. A faux zebra rug underfoot is a playful touch and keeps the room from being too sweet. A faux fireplace was fashioned from old boards and architectural fragments brings added comfort to the living room. Set on a salvaged table, a vintage candelabra romances the simple bedroom. In the window, tea towels are clipped onto a curtain rod. A former nightstand find a new purpose for storing and displaying favorite items n the kitchen. The rusticity of the bookcase is soften with a coat of pale pink and a dainty scalloped trim.

Suburban Cowgril
Staying true to her home's rural roots and love of the country life proved to be the right choice for this East Texas antiques dealer.

A pair of urns contributes a quiet sculptural touch, while pines cones speak of the farmhouse’s location. The sunny master bedroom features a new headboard upholstered in tan linen. Antiques, including an oak dresser and polished wood side tables, bring an old-world sense of coziness to the restful space. Christi combines her fondness for flea market painting, curious antique light fixtures and timeworn paint finishes in the sparely furnished dining room. Slipcovered seating, a gallery wall of vintage floral oil paintings, shutters and a flat-weave seagrass rug give the den a restful, cozy feel. The tufted velvet bench is another example of Christi’s selective splurges. The lush fabric adds a luxe touch to the practical charm of the surrounding furniture. For a bit of whimsy, Christi positioned a few of her cow figurines collections to appear as if watching those in the bucolic painting. Despite missing a few spindles, a curved-back garden bench offers extra seating and lots of character. Most of the wood furniture that catches Christi’s eye is either in its natural state or shows an organic patina. A wrought-iron lantern illuminates and eye-catching cerused workbench turned kitchen island. Even a cowgirl likes to indulge her feminine side may it be with flowers, poetry books or with jewelry, like these strings of turquoise beads. Christi decorates her living room with practicality in mind. Only essential pieces need apply, and while they should be pretty they also need to be sturdy enough for children and pets to enjoy.

History Reclaimed
In the fabled Lower Garden District of New Orleans, a forgotten home is reborn as a charming pied-a-terre.

Old, inexpensive European paintings and prints, even from flea markets, create the right atmosphere, especially when displayed as Rene did here. Pale blue hydrangeas nestled in an old container add a romantic note to the bedroom. The vintage mantle was a gift to Renee in admiration for all the work she has done to preserve and restore her home. When visitors drop by, they often head to the sunny galley kitchen, perhaps to enjoy a glass of wine with a baguette and cheese. Renee keeps the bedroom French blue and white theme fluid with pillows sporting variations on the hues and floral and pastoral patterns. The imposing pier mirror is a New Orleans original that Renee bought at an estate sale on the grand St. Charles Avenue. A galvanized tin flower vendor’s vase is a memento of travels through Italy . In the living room an intimate dining space boasts a recessed shelving area home to Renee's collection of vintage glasses and French coffee cups. In the living room, an oversize poster by 1920s French-Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello adds drama, along with a salvaged column and a scrolled-arm leather sofa. In a corner of the living room, Renee creates the feel of an elegant Parisian cafe with a wine glass-lined wall, stylish table and dressed up chairs. Renee fashioned a window scarf from a remnant of a vintage French fabric. A one-of-a-kind iron tester bed was cus-tom welded for the bedroom by master craftsman Larry Rousell. Floor-to-ceiling windows meet original wood floors, patched together from what Renee could salvage from the fire. “I do love the color contrast on the floor!” she says Renee visited historic homes like Malmaison, Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte’s country place outside Paris, in search of inspiration for her home's rich and dramatic wall colors.

Practical Sophistication
Like many lucky enough to visit Paris, Rachel Mullee returned enamored with the City of Light.Today, Rachel has found a way to bring touches of the fame French style into her Minnesota home.

A floor mirror adds dimension to the small dining room while cabinet provides display and offers safe storage for curated crockery. Most everything in the bathroom is original to the house simply freshened up with white paint and clip-on shades for the wall sconces; textiles usher in color.
A vintage armoire got a makeover with white paint and is now used to store bed linens, blankets, throws and other necessary items. Symmetry is created with a pair of identical chairs, wall sconces and baskets. The farmhouse sink is Rachel's favorite kitchen update. A bag from the famed French bakery Poilane in Paris is framed as art. “It’s not only beautiful but very meaningful.” Rachel fashioned a pair of narrow shelves from long marble pieces. A narrow sideboard constructed from 2’x4’s and pine planks provides a work area and storage for stylish baskets with a small footprint. In the dining room, coats of white paint unify secondhand finds into and elegant design set.For something different from traditional wainscoting, Rachel used tin ceiling tiles below the chair rail in the hallway. Rachel turns unassuming architectural remnants into works of art with the help of white paint and clever unions. Here, an old window shutter and a cast-off mirror join forces to create a small, stylish and practical living room sideboard. In the long and narrow master bedroom, Rachel makes space for the bed by skipping traditional nightstands and instead uses a diminutive shelf and wall lamp on one side and a small dressing table on the other. Rachel likes to bring a little The interior of the cabinet painted in Rachel’s signature palest blue grey provides just-right contrast to show-off prized possessions in a range of patinas and finishes. Monochromatic bedding gets a boost with texture and patterns and bring interest and comfort to the small bedroom. A palette of dusty blues introduces soft color to the table setting. Vintage linen napkins finish the elegant look.
