La Dolce Vita
A chef falls for the rustic elegance and old-world heart of a historic Florida home and fills it with the welcoming comfort of his native Italy.

With its warm tones, plaster walls, stones, bricks and tiles, the kitchen is a study in Tuscan style. Silky fabrics in coordinating colors unite pillows of disparate shapes and patterns. The Passionate Collector
The first thing you noticed in Bridget Schwartz's Oakland, California, apartment is its playful mix of colors. The living room is painted lavender, the dining room mint green, and the bedroom a rosy pink. All are decorated with vibrant furnishings.

Bridget's crocheted wall hanging grows organically from the materials she works with. Inspire by travels of yore, a brass-clad trunk adds a touch of glamour and stylish storage. A chaise lounge, upholstered in fabric from Jaipur, and a desk provide a den-like space for working and relaxing. Carved African mask and a quirky painted portrait hang over a continental bombé dresser. To keep things interesting, Bridget regularly rotates her wall art. A brass mushroom lamp sits atop a chinoiserie chest used as a bedside table and for storage. An armoire carved and pained in India provides a much-needed closet In Bridget's 800-square-foot home. A pair of 1980s mohair chairs stands out against the lavender walls. Though it appears to be a valuable sculpture, this terra-cotta figure was made in a mold. The Chinese bamboo armoire is covered with an Oriental print. A burled-wood bar by midcentury-modern master designer Milo Baughman makes a dramatic statement, while connecting the living and dining rooms. Kitties, Hershey, a Ragdoll, and Minky, a Persian, appreciate Bridget's fondness for comfy chairs and balls f yarn To balance the lavender walls and yellow sofa, Bridget uses rich blues and dark reds.

Island Gem
An array of whimsical furnishings, dazzling hues and lively patterns make up the prefect Florida beach retreat.

The surrounding nature is the inspiration for the decor. The master bedroom features vintage shutters converted into a sliding door using classic barn hardware. Four screen doors and a carved wooden beam were the starting point for the master bath. A modern chest of drawers is transformed into a antique with a multi-layers of paint, paisley swirls, and sunburst motifs. Soft hues get a boost from a colorful duvet. Cream-colored ceramic tiles edge a patchwork of hand painted Mexican tiles. An irons and porcelain chandelier crowns the master bedroom. Coastal motifs are always part of the decor at the beach house. For her eldest son, Kandy conjured a funky, old Florida feel that starts with reclaimed cypress paneling. A surf shack motif offers a lighthearted blueprint for fun and affordable ideas. Faux painting transformed plain cabinetry into one-of-a-kind kitchen. Hand painted by a local artist, this table is a real catch. Walls made of glass panels, called Nana Walls, fold accordion style (here they are fully open) for indoor-outdoor living.
