Synopsis
The quaint Sarasota, Florida, neighbourhood is a haven for artists, writers, and musicians, and home to world traveller Nina Royal. At the time Nina bought her circa 1926 cottage, Laurel Park was just beginning to enjoy a renaissance, but many of the homes were still in dire need of updating, including Nina's. 'As the expression goes, it did have great bones,' Nina says, 'But that was it. 'I loved the style. It reminded me of the houses we used to draw as kids.' Nina's unique decorating style stems from a variety of cultures but nature and spirituality are the two most influential elements of her life. Her home is a clear reflection of her easygoing soulful self. 'I am a Tibetan Buddhist so I like a space that feels somewhat sacred and has a calming, relaxed and has a welcoming energy.' Though simply furnished, Nina's rooms are cosy and charming. 'I love to mix textures, to see some sparkle or hang sheer embroidered scarves from India next to cotton curtains,' she explains. Nina's home isn't fancy or fussy or solemn but it has an aura of authenticity and friendliness that radiates from the natural, uncomplicated beauty she has created.
