A Place in the Country
A dramatic mix of remnants from the past and modern pieces brings a renewed beauty and energy to a vintage Virginia farmhouse.

In the library, a narrow table functions as a desk Stained to deep brown, the stately, ancient French shutters flanking the fireplace were repurposed as doors to conceal new closets. Daughters Sophie and Gweneal share playtime with their pets. A classic dresser paired with vintage mirror evokes a Scandinavian influence. Painting the inside of the built-in niche a charcoal gray puts the focus on an ever-changing display of favorite objects In the den, wool throw, raw linen, and a woven rug bring cozy, tactile accents to the den’s sofa and chair.
In the library, Jon Paul built the bookshelves and added a barn door sliding rail to which he attached an old apple ladder. Modern chairs dressed in slipcovers cozy up to the spacious table custom-made from recycled lumber. The drum shade contributes to the sleek and simple look. and sporting a contemporary design. Designed to promote a peaceful environment, the bedroom is sparsely furnished yet with a canopied bed dressed in lightweight linens reminiscent of a cocoon. A versatile old hospital stainless-steel rolling cart is used as an extra set of shelves for practical access to everyday items. Function meets imagination in an easy to clean zinc platter turned blackboard for grocery lists, messages or menus. A cherub statue, fabric roses and a glittering head form set a romantic vignette on an old metal cabinet in the bedroom. Elegant mercury candle holders balance more rustic elements.

Phoenix Rising
An abandoned Arizona home takes flight with mid-century modern furnishings and a major makeover.

The bedroom’s décor—which includes items culled from Modern Manor, as well as estate sale and Craigslist, trends toward cheerful tones. A leather armchair is accentuated with a colorful pillow with a geometric pattern. To make items pop, the walls were painted blue. These vintage vases were designed by the Bitossi company and Bagni. The metal horse was created in the style of Frederick Weinberg. The corner fireplace is the stand-out feature in Kylie and Ryan Durkin’s great room. Original rectangular block poured-concrete walls lend the space an organic feel. Attributed to pioneering modernist designer Harvey Probber, the round inlay coffee table acts as a stage for cobalt blue candlesticks and a Bitossi bowl. The remodeled bathroom's focal point is a freestanding bathtub adjacent to the glassed-in shower A vintage yellow vase filled with flowers in the same color family adds a cheerful note. Ryan and Kylie share a quiet moment in the garden with their two boys, Sawyer and River, and their Yorkshire terrier, Ollie. Keeping faithful to the mid-century mantra of creating beauty from
an amalgam of things you love, the couple chose a centuries-old French pastry counter as the kitchen’s focal point. A handsome vintage turquoise pottery is giving place of honor in the kitchen A stained-glass window, one of a pair the Durkins bought on Craigslist, sits atop an art-deco chest. On display are choice examples of Italian pottery, including a Rimini blue bull by Aldo Londi for Bitossi.

French Finesse
When Kathy and Doug McCabe left a large home in a Dallas, Texas, gated community for a small cottage in the historic district of McKinney, both life and style changed.

An open kitchen can mean lost wall space for cupboards and appliances. But Kathy creatively repurposed a long, narrow sideboard that was originally open to the lower shelf but now has a center section with warming drawers. To balance the formality of the chairs and install a relaxed feel, Kathy uses a bench outfitted with cushy pillows on one side of the table. The soothing grey and white palette gets a little dash of color from the green and white napkins and plates
When displayed in practical and pretty groupings, useful items become part of the decor. But rarely will accessories in a French country home be purely decorative. They usually have an undertone of usefulness like wall-hung plates that can be pulled down for service, or jugs and jars that house kitchen staples. Kathy likes repurposing vintage finds into unique accents, to make these beautiful objects live again. Antique serving domes make an intriguing radial arrangement. They hang on either side of the mirror in a balanced but asymmetrical design statement, in keeping with the couple’s relaxed style. Details matter to Kathy who prefers to show off fresh cut blooms in unique containers, like in this antique French pot. Once walled off from both the kitchen and living area, this sunny space plays dual roles as a dining room and a library. Antique French entry doors are suspended on tracks and wheels— barn door style—that are hidden by added-on crown molding. Doors are pull closed when needed but when left open guests can see the back kitchen walls from the front entry. The foyer is home to an antique French cherub, a vintage mirror and metal table. The delicate blue and white wallpaper heralds the color palette of the interior of the home. Decorating with character is what Kathy is all about. “Character is most important to me,” she says, “even more so than what style a piece represents. I like using things you aren’t going to see in a lot of homes to give a house a unique personality. In the hallway, a pair of antique mirrors is flanked with shapely and well scaled stone items displayed with an eye toward balance. Because there’s very little pattern in the rest of the house, a room full of pattern is a pleasant surprise. In quintessential French style, black and white toile adds cottage character suited to the attic space without detracting from the home’s calming neutrality. Pairing a stylish vintage slipper bathtub with a cast iron garden chair and a scrolled patterned wallpaper with beadboard brings classic cottage elegance to the guest bathroom.
Always careful to display items in their best light, Kathy hangs French towels from a wrought iron hooks with crystal finials.

On the Waterfront
It is said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and this holds true where Nikki and Jeff Labelle's home is concerned.

Keeping with the white and blue and old and new theme a wooden bucket holding fluffy beach towels stands by a vintage bench--a favorite reading place for 5-year-old Bode. The completely redone kitchen gave Nikki a chance to come up with the just the right finishes to complement the rest of the house, like the white cabinetry, stainless appliances and blue accents. A long wooden bench makes a perfect spot for keeping straw hats handy for walks on the beach. Frames made from recycle wood boards hold favorite family photos. Whether on their own or on place mats, shells and varied shades of blue and aqua are reoccurring motifs in the waterside cottage. Outfitted with comfortable sofas and chairs, the family room doubles as a reading room. A vintage armoire conceals the T.V in style. The French doors open onto a loggia, the pool and the view of the bay. In the living room, aqua and blue accents and shells of varied sizes and shaped contributes calming and welcoming mood.New couches are paired with a vintage coffee table and sideboard. Shells and books about the coast keep the cottage location in focus throughout the spaces. Filled with an orchid, starfish and sand dollars, a ceramic container makes a a cultural centerpiece anywhere it is placed. Borrowing space from a former balcony and enclosing it provided room for a stand-alone tub and an additional dressing area. Marble floors add a touch of luxury and a spa-like mood. Nikki's penchant for antiques carries into the master bedroom where a vintage mirror was constructed from a salvage frame. The piece rustic finish is balanced by feminine bed linens and a romantic chandelier with aqua pendants. Overlooking the Intercoastal waterways the eating area off the kitchen is the family's favorite spot to share their daily meals. Nikki had the cabinets built-in, and she painted the back a soft sky blue to recall the near-by waters and allow her white dishes to stand out. Star fish and sand dollars gathered into a large shell act a works of art while echoing the near-by sandy beach and the Gulf of Mexico. In keeping with the home's main color accent, an aqua chandelier takes center stage above the dining room table.
