Waterside Living
Refreshed with colours borrowed for sky, surf and sand, as dated waterfront properties is bought back to life.

Traditional style goes bold in the kitchen where white crown and box moldings are offset by lively leaf-green walls. Tiles and green hues tie together the kitchen and breakfast area. The family room takes its color cue from the water surrounding the home. The mater suite features a West-Indian style tongue-and-groove ceiling, grass cloth walls and turquoise accents. The family calls this space The inviting table setting included rattan chargers,Classic Bamboo china by Juliska, ceramic fish bowls and shell napkin rings. The living room embodies the seaside elegance of West Indie style. Raffia baskets keep sunblock and flip-flops within easy reach but out of sight. By the outdoor shower, colorful signs give a fun sense of directions and distances. The cabinet's center section has roll-back doors to hide the TV when not in use. Vibrant colors set the island vibe of the powder room. Dana and Ramsey's twins are always ready for a beach day. Italian glass mosaic tiles set as cabochons between travertine stone pavers echo the wall color in the master bedroom.

Bold and Beautiful
A traditional home gets a lively makeover with gemstone hues, offbeat art, and quirky accents.

A butteRfly portrait was the inspiration for the guest bedroom. The romantic white cane bed featuring hand carved details has a decidedly feminine air.
Shimmering mercury glasses and votive add touch of glamour the bathroom Even when not in use on the table, the glasses earn their keep as striking objects lined up on shelves Striped towels and zigzag rainbow rug add zip to an all-white bath. In a neutral space like this, it’s easy to dramatically change out the look of the room simply by playing with the accessories.
Mixing patchwork quilts and brightly patterned pillows creates a“collected over time” look. An artisan-made light fixture incorporating natural wood and shells replaced a formal chandelier in the dining room. A teal blue glass chandelier adds an unexpected dash of color up high. A bunny painting inspired the room’s palette. A collection of shimmering crystals lines a console that is part mantel, part table. In the kitchen, electric-blue ottoman- style stools welcome guests to lounge at the counter. Neutral cabinetry, original to the house, makes a seamless backdrop for touches of color to pop ouT. In the dining room, an exotic rug sets off the dark wicker chairs. By keeping things simple and livable, the Fidels have created a space that feels real, not contrived. In the master bedroom, a graceful arched raffia-upholstered headboard frames a collection of striped and lattice-look pillows. A fringed, patterned rug brings art underfoot. When they redecorated, the Fidels kept their old sofa but spiced it up with pillows and throws. The lamps’ black shades harmonize with the deep-toned armchairs nearby. The focal point in Kathi and Ray Fidel's foyer is a 5-foot-high mixed-media collage created by California artist James Verbicky using international currency.

Everafter Farm
Transforming and 1840s house into a family home is artist Dawne Polis's greatest masterpiece.

Dawne propped an old door behind a small cabinet and topped it with a Victorian painting. Her custom “antique” is the perfect fit for a previously bare corner. A set of diamond patterned wood doors found at the side of the road set in motion Dean’s cabinetry project on either side of the fireplace/ Pale periwinkle walls, well-worn woods and a French armoire create the cozy welcome that Dawne longed for. Keepsakes that appear to be family heirlooms are no less special for having been acquired at local auctions and yard sales. Over forty years after clipping an article about a red bed, Dawne purchased her very own. At its foot, sits a maple hope chest given to her by her father on her 16th birthday. An ornate Victorian fireplace surround complete the heritage look of the master bedroom. The back entry is used for far more than just coming in from the outside with a classic vinyl checkerboard floor, displays of copper pots and pans, and a cozy sunflower yellow tufted leather chair. A convex mirror hangs above a fireplace surround painted in distressed green. A gilded chair and table instill a touch of faded glamor. A Victorian fireplace mantle, a spacious table, a stately sideboard, and a blue and white theme sets the dining room French farmhouse comfort. From the chenille bedspread to the porcelain pitcher and basin, pretty much everything in the guest bedroom is a vintage find--including the oil painting. Homeowners Dawne and Dean Polis United with white paint, mismatched wall sconces make a fitting stage for displaying a Wedgwood pitcher and transferware canister. Blue hobnail goblets keep up with the dining room blue and white palette and patterns while paying tribute to Dawne’s fondness for one of France’s favorite country color combination. Gentle accessories, like this delicate vase and sheep figurines, bring softness to the country decor.

Phoenix Rising
An abandoned Arizona home takes flight with mid-century modern furnishings and a major makeover.

The remodeled bathroom's focal point is a freestanding bathtub adjacent to the glassed-in shower A stained-glass window, one of a pair the Durkins bought on Craigslist, sits atop an art-deco chest. On display are choice examples of Italian pottery, including a Rimini blue bull by Aldo Londi for Bitossi. The copper fireplace flue panel was “aged” to contrast with new earthy mosaic tiles. Keeping faithful to the mid-century mantra of creating beauty from
an amalgam of things you love, the couple chose a centuries-old French pastry counter as the kitchen’s focal point. A vintage yellow vase filled with flowers in the same color family adds a cheerful note. These vintage vases were designed by the Bitossi company and Bagni. The metal horse was created in the style of Frederick Weinberg. Prized possessions line built in shelves that frame a window niche. The kitchen walls are wallows with beveled subway tiles. A recess niche above the farmhouse sink features patterned tiles and a ledge. The corner fireplace is the stand-out feature in Kylie and Ryan Durkin’s great room. Original rectangular block poured-concrete walls lend the space an organic feel. The bedroom’s décor—which includes items culled from Modern Manor, as well as estate sale and Craigslist, trends toward cheerful tones. Ryan found the Sputnik chandelier at an estate sale. To make items pop, the walls were painted blue.

French Finesse
When Kathy and Doug McCabe left a large home in a Dallas, Texas, gated community for a small cottage in the historic district of McKinney, both life and style changed.

Clever detailing—such as the pedestal “legs” that flank the range—gives built-ins the look of separate furniture pieces. This unfitted look brings a Euro-country sensibility to a kitchen. This little reading nook exemplifies Kathy's love of repurposing vintage finds and to draw on and even amplify the home’s cottage character. To highlight the humble, handmade character of the home’s furnishings and architecture, Kathy keeps pattern minimal. She prefers cotton and linen fabrics in their natural state. A stone planter and birds bring a bit of the garden to the dining room table. The living room accommodates two sofas and lots of guests. The muted palette and well-chosen accessories contribute to the cottage’s classic French country look. The foyer is home to an antique French cherub, a vintage mirror and metal table. The delicate blue and white wallpaper heralds the color palette of the interior of the home. Kathy mixes wood pieces in a variety of natural finishes with metal ones that show a little age, and then ties everything together with a color scheme of gentle whites, dove gray and pale blue. A small foyer opens into the living room through the original arch doorway that highlights the style of the front door. Antique serving domes make an intriguing radial arrangement. They hang on either side of the mirror in a balanced but asymmetrical design statement, in keeping with the couple’s relaxed style. Because there’s very little pattern in the rest of the house, a room full of pattern is a pleasant surprise. In quintessential French style, black and white toile adds cottage character suited to the attic space without detracting from the home’s calming neutrality. Once walled off from both the kitchen and living area, this sunny space plays dual roles as a dining room and a library. Antique French entry doors are suspended on tracks and wheels— barn door style—that are hidden by added-on crown molding. Doors are pull closed when needed but when left open guests can see the back kitchen walls from the front entry. With its handprinted sign and ballet slippers, the door leading from the hallway to the guest room sets the tone for the inviting space. Once a detached one-car garage, this charming space is now an extra entertaining area. A built-in buffet keeps necessities at hand, plus its top surface acts as a serving and pass-through space when the bifold windows are opened to the outdoors. Kathy painted the nursery a rich buttercream for a warm color shift from other rooms, making it feel separate somehow, like a destination. An old wicker rocker and pillows made of vintage linens are timeless classics.
