Purposeful and meaningful pieces united disparate styles that give a small apartment a big dose of charm.

The neutral palette of linens is kept lively with the variety of textures. A Belgian grain sack with its seams removed runs along the farmhouse table. A giant clock constructed from a bistro tabletop rounds out the gallery wall. A weathered crate shows off delicate hydrangeas and chamomile blossoms. Melisa’s grandmother’s wood bowl, renewed with some sanding, makes a handy vessel for chunky knit washcloths and a bath brush. The shelving turned sideboard offers a display area for showcasing an ever-changing array of items.

Curated Cabin
A contractor and a seamstress team-up to create a forever home that is built to last.

Darryl made the headboard and Annie made the bedspread and pillows; other pieces add deep primary hues to the mix. Annie likes to fill her home with meaningful objects that tell a story Framed with wood salvaged from the family’s old barn, thIS canvas lists special dates in the family’s lives. Heritage pieces from Darryl’s grandmother make elegant nightstands while an antique steamer trunk offers stylish storage the foot of the bed. An old lard bucket makes a charming vessel for flowers. Darryl stumbled across a pair of vintage brass candleholders while renovating an old house and brought them home to Annie. “He’s always brings me home surprises!” she says. Collected vintage bottles make handy holders for garden clippings. The kitchen sink was another Darryl-find, he pulled it from an old farmhouse basement and then mounted it to old stair balusters; Annie made the skirt from French grain sacks. Annie adores exotic patterns, rustic elements, and a fusion of textural accents, which range from farmhouse to funky; solid walls and slipcovers keep things grounded and give the eye a place to rest. The pedestal bathtub is the star of the small bathroom. Hearty simple fare goes hand in hand laid-back country lifestyle With three teenage boys, Annie keeps the kitchen easy to navigate and unfussy. “We use mason jars as drinking glasses because they’re inexpensive, so it’s okay if they break,” she explains. An old birdcage is wired into bathroom light fixture. A desk functions as a nightstand and dressing table.

A Love Affair with White
A warm palette and plenty of touchable textures create a home that feels as good as it looks.

Candles and roses make a romantic centerpiece that highlights the rustic elegance of the room. Silver and glass items add shimmer and elegance. In Leah's home, authentic items, like this French girandole and Murano mirror, are valued over newly minted, store-bought items. Accessorizing with white items contributes to visual continuity. Because the kitchen is part of an open floor plan, Leah and Steve opted for “a more furniture-like” approach to cabinetry by designing it to appear as if supported on legs. An antique Murano glass mirror presides over a French chest of drawer painted a soft grey. Leah Anderson decorates with fewer pieces, each with show-stopping style, like the pedestal table and a salvaged, gothic-arch window made into a stately mirror frame. A stone and a sprig of greenery recalls the garden beyond. Vintage crystal and shells gathered on seaside strolls are favored accessories. A small European crate with artful typography gathers pretty linens and flowers into a tidy package. Sparkling antique and bespoke jewelry become part of the decor. Pairing rustic elements with more refined pieces creates interesting visual moments. Practical and beautiful, vintage painted bureaus stand in for skimpy nightstands.

Continental Charm
For interiors that look beautiful but live hard, fashion designer Lorna Goode combines old and new, earthy and elegant.

This primitive cupboard is
a Swedish antique. It tucks neatly into a corner of the dining room, lending its simple beauty along with extra storage. Contrasting primitive and polished creates design energy. In the master bedroom, travertine floors are an eco-friendly choice that offer subtle pattern and easy care. Mirrors take the place of glass in salvaged French doors. Tea, cookies and roses set on a mirror table are perfectly at home next to a cozy leather chair. Lorna reimagined several pieces of salvage to create this clever wet bar. The white center piece—a section saved from an old cupboard—is surrounded by drawers made of vintage wood. The same wood was used to make wall shelves that drop from a salvaged eyebrow window frame. A tabletop dressmaker form makes a sculptural caddy for necklaces. Greenery and flowers add pops of pure color to her neutral palette. Lorna had the walls designed around this antique French fireplace; they are extra thick to house the two-way limestone beauty. She’s owned the carved chairs for more than 20 years. “ The island pewter top can handle a lot of wear and tear in style. It also makes a great backdrop for colorful pottery and seasonal goods.
Rather than purely decorative, architectural salvage has a sense of purpose in this home. Replacing glass with mirror in salvaged window frames and French doors creates design interest. Mixing and matching new and antiques is one of Lorna's favorite design trick. Though it looks custom and old world, this elegant vanity is a new readymade piece. Thanks to their clean lines, antique Swedish dining chairs mix easily with a French limestone table. Worn floors add authentic vintage character. The kitchen island’s counterop is fashioned from pewter, inspired by a restaurant in France. The tongue-and-groove ceiling is original to the home. No starched napkins for this house; natural linen is more suited to the couple’s easy elegant style.

Suburban Cowgril
Staying true to her home's rural roots and love of the country life proved to be the right choice for this East Texas antiques dealer.

Christi combines her fondness for flea market painting, curious antique light fixtures and timeworn paint finishes in the sparely furnished dining room. A wrought-iron lantern illuminates and eye-catching cerused workbench turned kitchen island. The tufted velvet bench is another example of Christi’s selective splurges. The lush fabric adds a luxe touch to the practical charm of the surrounding furniture. Despite missing a few spindles, a curved-back garden bench offers extra seating and lots of character. Most of the wood furniture that catches Christi’s eye is either in its natural state or shows an organic patina. Christi decorates her living room with practicality in mind. Only essential pieces need apply, and while they should be pretty they also need to be sturdy enough for children and pets to enjoy. A pair of urns contributes a quiet sculptural touch, while pines cones speak of the farmhouse’s location. Slipcovered seating, a gallery wall of vintage floral oil paintings, shutters and a flat-weave seagrass rug give the den a restful, cozy feel. Even a cowgirl likes to indulge her feminine side may it be with flowers, poetry books or with jewelry, like these strings of turquoise beads. For a bit of whimsy, Christi positioned a few of her cow figurines collections to appear as if watching those in the bucolic painting. The sunny master bedroom features a new headboard upholstered in tan linen. Antiques, including an oak dresser and polished wood side tables, bring an old-world sense of coziness to the restful space.

Everafter Farm
Transforming and 1840s house into a family home is artist Dawne Polis's greatest masterpiece.

Homeowners Dawne and Dean Polis United with white paint, mismatched wall sconces make a fitting stage for displaying a Wedgwood pitcher and transferware canister. In the living room, refurbished furniture and slipcovers stitched from matelassé bedspreads temper elegance with comfort. A set of diamond patterned wood doors found at the side of the road set in motion Dean’s cabinetry project on either side of the fireplace/ A convex mirror hangs above a fireplace surround painted in distressed green. A gilded chair and table instill a touch of faded glamor. A Victorian fireplace mantle, a spacious table, a stately sideboard, and a blue and white theme sets the dining room French farmhouse comfort. Awash in country charm, the breakfast nook centers on a bright green table circled by thrift shop chairs. Keepsakes that appear to be family heirlooms are no less special for having been acquired at local auctions and yard sales. From the chenille bedspread to the porcelain pitcher and basin, pretty much everything in the guest bedroom is a vintage find--including the oil painting. Pale periwinkle walls, well-worn woods and a French armoire create the cozy welcome that Dawne longed for. Over forty years after clipping an article about a red bed, Dawne purchased her very own. At its foot, sits a maple hope chest given to her by her father on her 16th birthday. An ornate Victorian fireplace surround complete the heritage look of the master bedroom. Several reclaimed arched top doors were used to add wall-mounted cabinets. Refinished antique floorboards into countertop confer a historic pedigree. Dawne propped an old door behind a small cabinet and topped it with a Victorian painting. Her custom “antique” is the perfect fit for a previously bare corner.

French Rendition
There's an old saying among realtors that the three most important factors in whether a house or property get sold quickly are location, location, and location. That saying is never truer than along California's Pacific Coast.

A Welsh dresser showcases Penelope’s vintage ‘Happy Bird’ china and keeps the hand painted plates and mugs within easy reach. A painted wardrobe in the bedroom holds books and personal treasures. The master bath's focal point is a 19th century zinc-lined copper tub made in Paris in the 1860s. A space saving pot rack stands above the stout island that was painted in duck egg blue, wb=chin matches the doors' trim. Originally crafted for a French convent, the table’s small cubbies held the nuns’ dishes. When it was time for sustenance, the nun’s plates were at the ready. A hand painted ceramic rooster, given to the owners by Oprah Winfrey, perches on the dining room table. Penelope’s mother’s antique Italian chairs, dressed in hand-embroidered seat covers, surround the table.
An antique majolica bowl coddles heavenly blue eggs.
An old sugar mold makes a sweet utensil holder. In true farmhouse fashion a sink skirt covers the plumbing below an aged copper basin.
The couple’s bedroom is dressed in assorted toile and check fabric with elegant faded rose drapery forming a sleeping alcove. At the foot of the bed, a button tufted ottoman hides a pop-up TV.
With its double metal and rolled doors, the front entrance reveals the elegant interior of the home. Soft blues, country red and ochre yellows are the basis for the kitchen’s décor. The upper cupboards match the room’s trim while the lower cabinetry sports a rich crimson hue. An inviting window seat and a slipcovered French chair are sited at the heart of the big hall. A parade of chic pillows presents a mini-history of textile artistry.
Lime washed pink ochre walls impart warmth to the living room. Custom-made slipcovers combine a cornucopia of snazzy red prints and cheerful stripes.
