The Passionate Collector
The first thing you noticed in Bridget Schwartz's Oakland, California, apartment is its playful mix of colors. The living room is painted lavender, the dining room mint green, and the bedroom a rosy pink. All are decorated with vibrant furnishings.

Lacework, solid crochet, wrapped yarn, and tassels memorialize Bridget's pst relationship. In the bedroom, an antique Chinese armoire is paired with a vintage armchair topped with a nod pillow.
A brass mushroom lamp sits atop a chinoiserie chest used as a bedside table and for storage. An armoire carved and pained in India provides a much-needed closet In Bridget's 800-square-foot home. Silver and turquoise candlesticks perch on a carved sideboard Bridget brought back from a trip to Goa in western India. The Chinese bamboo armoire is covered with an Oriental print. A pair of 1980s mohair chairs stands out against the lavender walls. A vintage, hammered-copper pitcher makes a fitting vase. Kitties, Hershey, a Ragdoll, and Minky, a Persian, appreciate Bridget's fondness for comfy chairs and balls f yarn The galley kitchen offers a loosely defined retro vibe. To keep things interesting, Bridget regularly rotates her wall art. Though it appears to be a valuable sculpture, this terra-cotta figure was made in a mold. A burled-wood bar by midcentury-modern master designer Milo Baughman makes a dramatic statement, while connecting the living and dining rooms.

No Place Like Home
Purposeful and meaningful pieces united disparate styles that give a small apartment a big dose of charm.

A salvaged grain bin makes a handy couch-side storage while providing a staging spot for a variety of seasonal items. A weathered crate shows off delicate hydrangeas and chamomile blossoms. The shelving turned sideboard offers a display area for showcasing an ever-changing array of items.
Melisa had an old commercial baker’s rack reconstructed to half its size by her welder; she added barnwood shelves and kept the casters. The James’ busy little kitchen appears more airy than cramped thanks to sleek fixtures, bright blue walls and a 12-foot window. A section of brick framed by a walnut-drying rack, and a white couch that seems to recede into the light are among the skillful ways Melisa suggests space. The apartment’s tall ceilings can accommodate the tufted shelter bed with footboard. The neutral palette of linens is kept lively with the variety of textures. Melisa’s grandmother’s wood bowl, renewed with some sanding, makes a handy vessel for chunky knit washcloths and a bath brush. In lieu of nightstands, Melissa uses a pair of logs that have rayed with time. Metal letters spell the family’s name. A Belgian grain sack with its seams removed runs along the farmhouse table. A giant clock constructed from a bistro tabletop rounds out the gallery wall. A marigold throw adds a bold stroke of pigment against the brick wall. When Melisa spied the shelving unit at a junkyard, she knew she’d found the piece she needed the size and color were perfect for her living room. Though small, the bathroom is replete with modern updates.

History Reclaimed
In the fabled Lower Garden District of New Orleans, a forgotten home is reborn as a charming pied-a-terre.

In the living room an intimate dining space boasts a recessed shelving area home to Renee's collection of vintage glasses and French coffee cups. The vintage mantle was a gift to Renee in admiration for all the work she has done to preserve and restore her home. Renee keeps the bedroom French blue and white theme fluid with pillows sporting variations on the hues and floral and pastoral patterns. Renee visited historic homes like Malmaison, Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte’s country place outside Paris, in search of inspiration for her home's rich and dramatic wall colors. The imposing pier mirror is a New Orleans original that Renee bought at an estate sale on the grand St. Charles Avenue. Old, inexpensive European paintings and prints, even from flea markets, create the right atmosphere, especially when displayed as Rene did here. Renee uses flea market shutters imaginatively as cabinet doors and interior window coverings. A galvanized tin flower vendor’s vase is a memento of travels through Italy . Renee is an avid gardener and reaps the benefits with colorful blooms.
A small easel displays a vintage book about the old city of New Orleans. Renee fashioned a window scarf from a remnant of a vintage French fabric. When visitors drop by, they often head to the sunny galley kitchen, perhaps to enjoy a glass of wine with a baguette and cheese. Shutters lead to the bath, where a clawfoot tub and a Turkish marble sink on old stone pavers set an old-world mood. A one-of-a-kind iron tester bed was cus-tom welded for the bedroom by master craftsman Larry Rousell. Floor-to-ceiling windows meet original wood floors, patched together from what Renee could salvage from the fire. “I do love the color contrast on the floor!” she says
