Synopsis
'Little things mean a lot,' the saying goes. Bostonians Gayle and Rob Macchi would probably agree: Their 1930s cottage on Nantucket Sound measures a mere 430 square feet about the size of a small two- car garage but it has smitten their hearts in a great big way. Located within walking distance from the beach, the little house needed some loving when they bought it. So the couple rolled up their sleeves and, while neighbors strolled by on their way to the beach, they dug in and did most of the work themselves, adding style on a modest budget. Tearing up some old flooring, painting all the dark pine white (walls, ceilings, and beams), and adding simple pendant fixtures here and there gave the cottage interior a fresh outlook. 'It immediately looked larger and more open,' says Gayle, who also added dollops of turquoise, inspired by a pillow she found. 'It reminded me of water, so I balanced all the white with natural rattan rollup shades for warmth and texture like a sandy beach'. Even though the place was small, Gayle and Rob cleverly carved out places where family members could comfort- ably spend the warm summer nights. Rob tucked a sleep- ing loft into the peak above the master bedroom alcove for granddaughters Nicolette and Victoria, ages 7 and 13. And interior a fresh outlook. They could have used some space for dining or even expanding the kitchen turned the porch became a breezy bedroom, equipped with two twin beds.
