Synopsis
As she stands in the hallway of her intricately curated house in an ankle-length vintage dress, it’s clear why Maxine du Preez had to leave her career in banking to become an interior design consultant. When she and her partner, Jason, were hunting for a new home with a garden for their son Noa, five, Maxine knew this dusty 1930s gem with its veranda vista of Table Mountain and Cape Town harbour would scrub up well. Jason, understandably, was deterred by the general mess from the previous owners’ 48-year tenure, but eventually relented. ‘I loved this house and I had to fight for it,’ Maxine laughs. In early 2013 they undertook a partial renovation, clearing rooms and gutting the kitchen and bathrooms.
