Synopsis
Most recently a real estate office, the one-room cottage was stuffed with desks and file cabinets, but it had a nice fireplace, attractive wood floor and a vaulted ceiling that made the house seem larger than its 300 square-feet, and also had sliding doors connecting to the garden. 'Our aim was to create a getaway that was more comfortable than a hotel suite,' Carol says. Michael, a builder by trade, hung cabinets on one side of the fireplace and installed a new kitchen sink and undercounter refrigerator. On the other side, Carol added a console to house media equipment and hold a small television. Opposite the fireplace, Michael built a partial bead-board wall, which separates the sleeping area from the living room. White woodwork and soft blue walls exude cheerfulness and contribute an airy and bright feel. 'Our goal was to open the door and feel like we were on vacation,' Carol says. 'And we accomplished it.'
