Synopsis
The small galley kitchen was at the back of the house and Lisa soon found that when she was cooking she was separated from the rest of the family and constantly had to walk out into the hallway and into the lounge at the front of the house to see what the children George 8, and Imogen 5 were doing. ‘We definitely wanted some proper ‘family space,’ she says. ‘I wanted a bar where the children could sit and have their breakfast and we could chat, and I also wanted somewhere for us to have family meals together at the dining table.’

The space just wasn’t working and by the autumn of 2005, the couple decided the time had come for a dramatic change. They decided to knock through the lounge, dining room and kitchen to form an open plan L-shaped living area and gain extra space by extending the back wall by three metres with glazed sliding doors that run across the back of the house. The building work went more or less according to plan although Lisa remembers some nights when the family camped in her daughter’s bedroom with just a microwave and kettle and no running water.
