Synopsis
A large one bedroom flat in a converted Edwardian house in Hackney, East London, that was once a two bedroom flat with wall to wall blue carpets and bright red walls. Neal stripped the property back to reveal all its original features and restored the cornicing and original floorboards, adding reclaimed radiators and an antique French fireplace. He then knocked down two walls to create one spacious master bedroom and an open plan sitting room and kitchen. Neal was previously a Director at Yves Saint Laurent and took inspiration from the YSL store designs, choosing a chic monochrome palette of black and white punctuated by colourful prints and vintage accessories. “I love monochrome colours and wanted to keep the flat flooded with the amazing natural light we get here,” says Neal. “Using black and white creates a blank canvas to showcase the furniture and my favourite things within each of the rooms. It can be quite a cold look but I hope I've warmed it up with my books and curiosities and a decent injection of fun and personality.” Neal used Farrow and Ball's All White on the walls and sanded the original floorboards before painting them with Farrow and Ball's Pitch Black floor paint. The radiators were salvaged from a local school and painted with Pitch Black full gloss.
