Artist in Residence
Noted tatie designer Jennifer Paganelli turns the rooms of her Connecticut farmhouse into sweet, sensational eye candy!

Playful accents join fabrics in pumped up pastels. Sunny yellow walls wrap it all up. Jennifer works with colors three have a similar energy level––the same brightness. Five years after they moved in, Jennifer and Peter renovated to open up the cramped kitchen. White walls and trim, along with white lacquered vintage furniture, set the stage for fabrics with classic motifs and saturated color. Blue accessories steal the scene. Flowers from Jennifer's fabrics rest in a vintage silver bowl. Patterns and colors unite harmoniously. Jennifer's own fabric decorate even space of her home. The guest bedroom is also a room for experimenting with fabric combinations and sometimes for photographing Jennifer’s books and projects. Pretty details, like the lampshade and vase are always part of Jennifer's decorating touches. Much of the home’s art is by Pennsylvania German folk artist Barbara Strawser. Her art enhances watercolors that blend with— and sometimes inspire—a room’s palette. Jennifer serves up less eye-popping pattern in the dining room so that her favorite collection— watery blue glassware— can steal the scene. Textile designer Jennifer Paganelli and her best friend.

Chic Meets Cosy
Design aficionado Anita Joyce brings the iconic French farmhouse style to her Texas home.

Anita employed harmonious grays and blues to give her dining room a serene appeal. The walls soft color forms a serene backdrop while gunmetal gray linen graces the ruffle-skirted chair cushions. For the guest bedroom, Anita chose a French toile for its color and pattern. Hotel silverware is corralled in an antique ironstone pitcher. An embroidered hand- woven linen tablecloth sets the stage for
Sunday breakfast. Lavender-scented French milled soap sits on a tiny hand-painted porcelain tray Anita found in France. A Texas cowhide anchors an elegant seating area in the master bedroom. A cozy stone– tiled fireplace is the natural focal point of the Joyce family’s living room. Above, architectural doors cleverly hide a flat-screen TV. The master bath, with its freestanding tub, heirloom chandelier and an array of French accents makes it easy to imagine you are soaking away your cares in Provence A garden chair and pitcher of flowers bring outdoor flavor to the bedroom. A massive bronze lantern hangs above breakfast room table. Built-in plate racks stretch from floor to ceiling to hold Anita’s collection of plates. In the upstairs hallway, Anita created a display worthy of a French flea market. Worn and Wonderful
An old cabin is brought back to life with materials honoring its roots.

An old frame outfitted with hooks offers an unusual display spot for flower-filled jars. A soft blend of pastel hues adds romantic undertones to the new bedroom addition. The bare floor exposes the raw beauty of the wood and provides a link to the original cabin. The old shelf displays some of Michelle's inherited collection of antique canisters. A Touch of Fall
This North Carolina farmhouse makes the most of Autumn with gourds and pumpkins to bring home the season with an organic flair.

Even the staircase gets a fall touch with more gourds lining the steps. A vintage fireplace surround gets a subtle Fall makeover with grouping of tiny gourds in the same color family. A seasonal display of gourds adds a hint of color that offsets a palette of neutral tones, and radiates country vibes. Gourds in varied sizes and colors are piled high on an old wooden create to form a fun centerpiece that reflect the time of the year. Kayla painted an old washstand with dark milk paint and stripped its top to serve as a bedside table. In Autumn, wooden candle holders are topped with tiny pumpkins to bring seasonal flair to the bedroom. Little gourds and greenery are gathered in an old wooden crate for a festive centerpiece on the living room coffee table. In lieu of artwork, Kayla showcases greenery spilling from a zinc pot attached to to chicken wire in a wood frame. “I’m all about getting the look I want for less,” Kayla says. For her breakfast nook, the table she wanted cost $2,500. Instead, she sourced a look-alike for a mere $250. Homemade wood and chicken wire frames are decorated according to seasons. To allow the table centerpiece to remain the main focus, Kayla opted to hang a simple magnolia wreath. Kayla usually rescues and refinishes the furniture for her home, but she bought this redone bedroom chest from a friend. “The contrast between the bare wood and the gray chalk-painted drawers with the original hardware really spoke to me.”She says. A magnolia wreath hangs on a pair of antique European shutters. The kitchen cabinets had recently been replaced when the couple bought the house, but Kayla didn’t like their dark finish. She painted them in a dual tone to give depth to the space. Greenery-filled metal paintbrush holders flank the window. The vintage cutting boards are part of Kayla’s collection. Kayla’s grandparents knew this antique sideboard was exactly the type of present their granddaughter would appreciate. Stripped and painted white, the piece is one of the dining room’s star attractions. It holds her collection of white Ironstone dishes, some of which is display as wall art. A shiplap wall and a variety of aged woods create a sense of history in the couple’s bedroom. The king-sized showstopper bed features a distressed headboard frame with tufted upholstery layered with a rustic whitewashed wooden mantel panel. Kayla turned farmers' market baskets into unusual 'chandeliers

Rural Romance
Traditional craftsmanship and personal designs honor a former vintage Connecticut dairy farm.

Brass candlesticks, a silver teapot and a Chinese Canton teacup are among Ellen’s favorite items. An antique scale was discovered in nearby Woodbury, Connecticut. The quirky green glass “sacred cow” paperweights were market treasures found on a trip to India. A vintage bottle makes a fitting vessel for roses in a hue in keepsing with the pink accents of the bedroom . Wide chestnut floorboards are balanced by handmade wood cabinets
painted with flat-white milk paint. A backsplash of lustrous Carrera marble mini tiles
contrasts black honed-granite countertops. “I love hydrangeas. They are so New England!” Ellen says. Bouquets of purple blooms adorn antique flea-market vases. A bed-crown treatment made from a favorite Osborne & Little print softens the bedroom window. A hand-embroidered, bittersweet orange-and-cream coverlet from India instills a feminine touch. The 1940s curvy wing chair reupholstered in flax linen adds creature comforts. Natural light bathes the countryside dining room, which is simply but elegantly furnished with favorite vintage chairs and an ample antique table.
Old copper cooking pots and pans warm modern stainless appliances, while adding country charm to the updated kitchen. To satisfy a serious yearning for a glorious master bath, Ellen carved space from an adjacent bedroom to fit and feature this deep, old English-style soaking tub fashioned in polished tin and porcelain. Ellen Allen’s living room welcomes visitors with a vivid contrast in textures—refurbished post-and-beam barn boards, exposed brick and flagstone, a whitewashed antique hearth, and a casual sisal rug. The blue Kantha quilt draped over a classic 1950s sofa was hand-printed in India. An original slanted doorway adds charm and opens to a walnut sideboard converted into a sink and vanity. A cozy footstool and Oriental rug warm the private space. Refurbished chestnut floorboards highlight two perfectly preserved French campaign chairs acquired at a Paris flea market. The pieces are contrasted by a newer table and an exotic Ikat pillow. A pair of 1809 hand-beaded Native American rodeo gloves pays tribute to the past.
