Synopsis
Vanessa Seddon is used to renovating properties, but even she wondered whether she had done the right thing when she bought and moved into a dilapidated house that had been empty for years. As well as being freezing cold and riddled with damp, the dark, dated property was crawling with spiders, black with mould and mildew, and the wood was so rotten it needed stripping back to a shell. ‘I was looking for a house to renovate and offered a really low price, not really thinking I would get it,’ says Vanessa. ‘I was amazed when the owner accepted and seriously asked myself whether I was brave enough to take it on. I would be renovating it on my own and it was a huge challenge, but I said to myself, ‘Yes, you can do it’. It was a big gamble because I decided not to have a major survey of the house. I knew it was a wreck, so there would be no unwelcome surprises.’
