Synopsis
Perched on a hill in the leafy suburb of Wooloowin, “The Captain’s Cottage” was built in 1890. “The captain was a master mariner and, by chance, he was related to the woman who I bought the house from,” says the current owner, interior consultant, Tess Wells. “The whole house was purple and green, it was frightening. But as soon as I walked in I loved it, it had soul – and I instantly visualised what I would do.” The former decorator started by re-painting all the internal walls with Dulux Vivid White. “It totally opened up the space.” The neutral white also creates a perfect background for Tess’ collection of exquisite fabrics and wallpapers, which feature strongly in the home. Nina Campbell’s ‘Perroquet’ was selected for the kitchen, “Some worry that wallpaper is not hardy enough in the kitchen but as long as you keep it away from the wet areas, such as the sink, it’s absolutely fine, and adds some character to an often purely utilitarian space.”
