Synopsis
Susie and Paul Morgan were already living in a large farmhouse in Devon, and decided to downsize when their children, now in their twenties, went off to work in London. The couple began house hunting in 2006, but couldn’t find any thing they liked - so they decided to look for a plot with a house they could demolish and rebuild instead. Soon afterwards, they heard via the grapevine that a promising-sounding property near Axminster had just come on to the market. “The cottage was totally run-down, and a real 1960s eyesore!”, says Paul. “Yet it had a good size garden, and a fabulous location, so we decided to go for it.”

Neither Susie nor Paul were prepared for the monumental problems they encountered in obtaining planning permission. “We’d had our initial plans agreed in principle when our Planning Officer retired,“ says Paul“ His successor didn’t like our proposals one bit, and wouldn’t allow us to demolish the existing house, so we had to start again from scratch with a different set of designs
