Synopsis
The ‘L’ shaped, featherboarded building was, Sadie says, ‘thrown up’ as a temporary home during World War II. She and husband Jeremy arrived there fresh from France, where a business selling restored furniture, fabrics, and organising parties had taken off. “We were looking to rent but found nothing suitable until our estate agent mentioned this place had a workshop Jeremy could use for restoring old furniture and making free-standing kitchens, so we rushed round,” Sadie says.

They were captivated by its lonely location on the downs close to Winchester and by it’s utilitarian interior, which had changed little since the war. “It was like stepping back in time,” Sadie remembers. “It still had the original chequered floor tiles and Rayburn in the kitchen, and loose old parquet, which moved as you walked over it.”
