Synopsis
While many may refer to space as one of the ultimate luxuries, Nicci and Mike Martin’s small home is exactly what they’ve always wanted and they insist it suits their every need. The couple’s love for compact spaces dates back to a four-year stint living in Prague, where they stayed in petite loft apartments and embraced the idea of humble living. ‘This house is perfect for us. We’re not big on collecting a lot of stuff and love the fact that everything is always within our reach,’ says Nicci, a freelance illustrator and mother of two young daughters. Not only does living in a small space encourage interaction among her family, Nicci says it also allows for the accumulation of only the bare necessities. She can prepare meals in the kitchen and, at the same time, be part of the fun with her children playing in the living room. ‘Because there isn’t much room for decoration, we keep the design of the space quite simple - a preferred aesthetic for us,’ she says.
