Synopsis
The River Thames flows directly beneath Michael D’Souza’s sitting room. His home hugs the South Bank at Mortlake, and through its elegant windows, we watch muscled rowers slog, as they beat a path through the chilly waters. Meanwhile, we are cocooned in the warm, eclectic interior, surrounded by the animal skins, leather furnishings, silks and linens that are Michael’s trademark. Michael was born in Goa, into an army family who enjoyed a peripatetic lifestyle, mostly spent moving around the hill stations of southern India. These childhood years were to become the inspiration for Mufti, (a word for civilian dress worn by military types), the shop he opened in 1993, when he switched careers from high-flying, New York based advertising executive to London based interior retailer.
