Synopsis
Hidden behind an old wooden door in a brick wall on a lush Kent lane is a pretty clapboard cottage and a serene, secret garden. It looks as if it has been there for centuries but this haven of tranquil good taste is a far cry from the dilapidated property Melanie Marchant bought in the autumn of 2010. 'I viewed all kinds of properties in the Rye area before I found this one,' she says. 'It was in a terrible state but I saw its potential straightaway. I loved the setting and the fact you couldn't see it from the road. It's a secret house and the bit I adored the most was the magical garden, with its pond surrounded by waving grasses and climbing roses.'
