Synopsis
With its blue clapboard exterior and confident, clean lines, Max and Kate Lyons’ seaside house wouldn’t look out of place in Nantucket. Instead it is set among the bungalows and redbrick flats on the south shore of sleepy Hayling Island, a hammerhead shark-shaped piece of land between Portsmouth and Southampton, on the east Hampshire coast.

Three years ago, Max drove down to Hayling Island to take his dogs for an early-morning walk. “As I walked towards the beach I saw this dilapidated old building, right on the seafront. It was a boarded-up cafe with bits falling off it and in a really bad state.” He immediately spotted its potential. “It was a wide plot and you don’t often get that on the beach in Britain.”
