Synopsis
“Before I started planning the house, I visualised how I wanted it to look. I wanted it to be light and open and remind me of living by the beach,” says Maria, recalling the refurbishment of the house in south west London that she and her South African husband Gary bought five years ago.
Maria was born in South Africa and her childhood was spent there and in Portugal, the home country of her parents. Some twelve years ago she and Gary moved to London. “We came because of Gary’s work in the music industry but I started looking around for something creative to do myself. I’d studied interior design in Lisbon (at the Fundacao Ricardo Espiritu Santo) so I opened a small shop selling furniture and bed linen and that was the beginning of Chic Shack,”
