Synopsis
Leonora Hammond’s home is a light, white, New England-style dream but when she first visited it was; ‘A beige and brown brick horror, all dark inside, with barn ends, not gables like we have now.’
A seemingly insignificant detail but one which grated on her designer’s eye and helped sparked the transformation to the property she now lives in.
She and husband Jamie were looking for ‘a bit of a project’ and when he spotted the original property, near his parents’ home and minutes from the yachtties’ paradise of Chichester Harbour, he urged her to take a look. ‘It took some convincing as the original property was in a ‘dark corner’,’ Leonora remembers. ‘In addition to the gloomy brick it had a big garage to the side and a York stone fireplace, with dark, parquet flooring and a plastic conservatory on the corner.’
However, because they wanted to live in the area, close to Chichester harbour, from where they could enjoy their family passion for sailing; ‘We bought it, even though we weren’t sure what we were going to do with it!’
