When it came to moving house, Lee Bagnald and her partner Nick knew exactly where they wanted to live – but they were open to the style and period of the property, and Lee’s background in interiors meant they had no qualms about a full renovation project. ‘We wanted our son Tyler to be able to walk to school, and I needed easy access to the West End, so our target area was fairly well defined,’ she explains. ‘This house stood out because it had such great potential.’ Formerly a coach house and stables attached to the rather grand Edwardian property next door, the bones of the building were sound, though its interior needed a complete rethink. ‘It was converted into a dwelling in the 1950s, and the house had been owned by the same person for 35 years, so things were very dated,’ Lee recalls. ‘The rooms were also very cramped. For example, the attic space was split up into two bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate WC. Now it’s just one bedroom with an en-suite bathroom.’ Working with friend and colleague Lisa Burke, of Lisa Burke Interiors, and builders Edmunds Design and Construction, Lee set about opening up the space. ‘We ripped the house apart, there were no walls or floors left after the demolition phase,’ she recalls. ‘Everything we did was about creating light and space. We extended the kitchen, converted a large first-floor bedroom into a spacious bathroom, extended the master bedroom out into its former balcony area, and widened the hall by pinching a little of the sitting room.’
