Synopsis
When Julia Cope-Lincoln decided she needed a larger home from which she could run her interior design and painted furniture business, she found a detached 1940s villa in Devon that had been divided into two flats. “One of the building’s main attractions was its fantastic location”, says Julia. “Five minutes from the sea, it’s perfect for taking my dog for walks on the beach.” But the property’s pretty facade hid a very bad conversion. “The place was a warren of tiny rooms”, explains Julia, “and just about everything you could think of needed doing”. I knew I’d have to rip it all out and start from scratch, but even once I realized how much time and effort would be involved, I still decided to go ahead, because the villa offered me the potential to create a lovely new home with plenty of space to work in. Luckily, I was still able to carry on living in my old flat until the house was habitable”, Julia continues. “Otherwise I’d probably have had to camp out in the garden!” Once the property had been gutted - which involved removing two front doors, two central heating circuits and two electricity meters - Julia’s first challenge was to redesign the layout. “Having pulled down the partitions on the ground floor, my priority was to create a large kitchen-cum-dining room. As the house didn’t have a particularly “period” feel, I went for a more streamlined look here”, she says. “I’m usually a “chandeliers and sconces” sort of person, but I felt like being a bit more adventurous with this house. I think this modern look works well with my antique pieces; for example, my painted old Swedish table looks perfectly at home in the hi-gloss kitchen.”
