Synopsis
When holidaying in the Western Cape village of Greyton 20 years ago, art lovers Davida and Bram Wind came across a house that fitted the profile of their dream home: old, derelict and full of character. ‘It was in a bad way and I loved it!’ says Davida. The intensive refurbishment that ensued saw the couple knocking down walls, rebuilding the fireplace, sanding the Oregon floors and stripping the timber ceiling, all without any help. ‘I’ve touched every inch of this house and that’s why it’s so dear,’ she says. Describing herself first and foremost as a gardener, Davida’s passion is reflected indoors. The rooms are an explosion of artwork, tapestries and textures, all awash in autumn hues that mirror the roses in the front garden and, of course, the 200 lemon trees. The contents of the house read like a catalogue of their lives.
