Synopsis
Dan's talent as an acclaimed production designer for film and television has certainly influenced his creative approach to decorating the early Regency house in Hastings that he shares with his partner Gareth, a garden designer, and their dog, Brock. While the style of the house is unquestionably comfortable and rustic, it is also theatrical and eclectic in equal measure. Antique and vintage furniture sits alongside salvaged treasures, junk shop finds and artwork by Dan himself with the resulting mix feeling elegant and homely. When Derek and Tony started looking for a new home, they had no idea that they would eventually end up leading a more simple life on the Sussex coast. Initially looking for somewhere to spend weekends away from London, the couple rented a cottage in the area but fell in love with the slower pace of life that Hastings offered and decided to make it their permanent home. “We were living in a little flat in Soho and we knew we wanted to get out of London as much as we could, but we didn't want to make the move to the countryside,” recalls Derek. “We had friends in Hastings and so we initially rented a cottage, coming down at the weekends but then we realised that because it was so affordable, we could buy a house here, which we couldn't in London.” The move worked out when Tony landed his dream job as a gardener at nearby Great Dixter and Derek realised that he was able to continue his design work just as easily from Hastings as central London. That was nine years ago and they have never looked back.
