Synopsis
The new build is a stones throw away from the thatched cottage which was the family home of Charlie, his wife Kate and their two children Maia and Toby for 12 years and is now the office for his architecture practice. Hidden beneath a roof garden of roses, herbs and vegetables, built into the hillside, is a stunning single story house clad with Cotswold stone and interspersed with floor-to-ceiling glass. Charlie was keen to use organic materials such as stone, wood and Corten steel panels that improve with age and blend into the rural landscape. Inside the interior is a considered blend of rustic with modern comforts and a celebration of natural materials such as rough plaster walls, concrete floors and wooden cabinetry. Kate has cleverly contrasted and softened the raw textures with furnishings including rich velvets, washed linen, patterned rugs and rattan artefacts. Architecturally, the house has many interesting features including a curved concrete wall and a vast oak and zinc shelving structure which divides the corridor from the dining and living spaces. Charlie specialises in eco-friendly design and, with rainwater harvesters, roof lights and solar panels, the house is sustainable as well as super stylish.
