Synopsis
It was the high ceilings and large rooms which attracted Charlie King to a run down property round the corner from her original flat in Wimbledon 18 months ago. “We could see through the dated decor and the strange layout, “said Charlie, “and straightaway we were having lots of thoughts and plans about how we could change things around, which was a good sign.” Keen to gain an extra bedroom, so that guests could stay, plus a proper garden, Charlie and partner Andrew had looked at a handful of properties locally, but none had grabbed them. “They were too finished. We wanted to be able to put our own stamp on things. I would feel bad about ripping out something that was nearly new. This place was ripe and ready for a makeover, but it was the space that actually won us over.” Securing the flat in September 2012, the couple got planning, and decided on a layout that would suit them and daughter Honor, 11. “We wanted to achieve another bathroom, and one big room where we could do everything from eat to relax to entertain. The sitting room was absolutely massive, and the master bedroom was huge too, so we played around with ideas for both. The original bathroom on the other hand was absolutely tiny and looked like it had been shoved in as an afterthought, as well as being dated and a bit grubby.’
