Synopsis
Cecilia and John Buffery had always wanted to live in a country cottage with a big garden. So when John saw an estate agent hammering in a For Sale sign outside a secluded property in their Hampshire village, he immediately called his wife. “ I was in a meeting in London at the time but he said we had to go and see it that evening or we’d lose it,” Cecilia remembers. “Little did I know it would take us a year to actually buy the place -- every time we moved ahead there was another legal hold-up! But we are so happy here it was completely worth it in the end”. What was the cottage like when you first saw it? “It was a complete wreck and a total contrast from the modern estate house we were living in. It had belonged to an elderly lady and her son and didn’t appear to have been touched for about 50 years. It was dark, smelled very damp, had a downstairs bathroom and ancient wallpaper all over the walls.
