Synopsis
When Leopold, their youngest son, was born, Cécile and Laurent decided to swap their flat in the city centre of Bordeaux for a house with a garden. The family first hesitated to move to the country. But they found this house with a garden in a pleasant residential neighbourhood only a few minutes from the city centre and it struck them as a perfect compromise.
Built at the end of the 19th century, the house, although divided into flats, had kept its original neo-classic features. “We really liked the fact that there had hardly been any revamping in terms of space and decoration. The original character was still intact,” Cécile explains.
However, one year of construction work was necessary to renovate the house and adjust it to modern family life. “We started working with an architect but it didn’t go very well. He tried to impose his vision without listening to our wishes. A contemporary layout with cubes everywhere,” Laurent relates. “Eventually, we re-imagined the place ourselves and dealt with building contractors directly.”
