When Anita Burgess and her husband, Chris, saw a Grade II listed Victorian school near their house in Beckenham, Kent, they thought they had found the house of their dreams. ‘It had been converted into two flats,’ says Anita. ‘And from the outside we could see fabulous long windows which caught our imagination.’ But when the couple went to see the top floor flat for the first time their dreams were squashed and they had to draw on Anita’s innate sense of style before they could envisage making a home here for themselves. ‘The previous owner had her consulting room here,’ Anita recalls. ‘While her son lived in the other rooms. We were pretty appalled to find the place filthy, with empty beer bottles and take-away food boxes littering the floors.’ But never daunted, Anita and Chris loved the spaces and the light and could see plenty of potential.
