French Finesse
When Kathy and Doug McCabe left a large home in a Dallas, Texas, gated community for a small cottage in the historic district of McKinney, both life and style changed.

Homeowners Kathy and Doug McCabe Once a detached one-car garage, this charming space is now an extra entertaining area. A built-in buffet keeps necessities at hand, plus its top surface acts as a serving and pass-through space when the bifold windows are opened to the outdoors. In lieu of more conventional artwork a display of porcelain platters creates a contrast to the zinc canopy and a soft focal point. To balance the formality of the chairs and install a relaxed feel, Kathy uses a bench outfitted with cushy pillows on one side of the table. The soothing grey and white palette gets a little dash of color from the green and white napkins and plates
The foyer is home to an antique French cherub, a vintage mirror and metal table. The delicate blue and white wallpaper heralds the color palette of the interior of the home. The symmetrical arrangement flanks the elegant fireplace and is anchored by a simple yet ample coffee table, which doesn’t visually weigh down the scheme. Once walled off from both the kitchen and living area, this sunny space plays dual roles as a dining room and a library. Antique French entry doors are suspended on tracks and wheels— barn door style—that are hidden by added-on crown molding. Doors are pull closed when needed but when left open guests can see the back kitchen walls from the front entry. With its handprinted sign and ballet slippers, the door leading from the hallway to the guest room sets the tone for the inviting space. In the hallway, a pair of antique mirrors is flanked with shapely and well scaled stone items displayed with an eye toward balance. Clever detailing—such as the pedestal “legs” that flank the range—gives built-ins the look of separate furniture pieces. This unfitted look brings a Euro-country sensibility to a kitchen. Decorating with character is what Kathy is all about. “Character is most important to me,” she says, “even more so than what style a piece represents. I like using things you aren’t going to see in a lot of homes to give a house a unique personality. A small foyer opens into the living room through the original arch doorway that highlights the style of the front door. A stone planter and birds bring a bit of the garden to the dining room table.

Rural Romance
Traditional craftsmanship and personal designs honor a former vintage Connecticut dairy farm.

A vintage bottle makes a fitting vessel for roses in a hue in keepsing with the pink accents of the bedroom . Old copper cooking pots and pans warm modern stainless appliances, while adding country charm to the updated kitchen. Refurbished chestnut floorboards highlight two perfectly preserved French campaign chairs acquired at a Paris flea market. The pieces are contrasted by a newer table and an exotic Ikat pillow. A pair of 1809 hand-beaded Native American rodeo gloves pays tribute to the past. Ellen Allen’s living room welcomes visitors with a vivid contrast in textures—refurbished post-and-beam barn boards, exposed brick and flagstone, a whitewashed antique hearth, and a casual sisal rug. The blue Kantha quilt draped over a classic 1950s sofa was hand-printed in India. To satisfy a serious yearning for a glorious master bath, Ellen carved space from an adjacent bedroom to fit and feature this deep, old English-style soaking tub fashioned in polished tin and porcelain. Wide chestnut floorboards are balanced by handmade wood cabinets
painted with flat-white milk paint. A backsplash of lustrous Carrera marble mini tiles
contrasts black honed-granite countertops. Ellen curates antique books during her global travels. The mantel showcases her passion for first-edition children’s titles. An antique scale was discovered in nearby Woodbury, Connecticut. “I love hydrangeas. They are so New England!” Ellen says. Bouquets of purple blooms adorn antique flea-market vases. A modern acrylic coffee table displays fresh flowers along with favorite design books. Natural light bathes the countryside dining room, which is simply but elegantly furnished with favorite vintage chairs and an ample antique table.
Light streams from many windows to fill the living room, once an old brick porch housing orchids in winter.
The cozy corner table offers a quiet spot for breakfast or tea for two. The quirky green glass “sacred cow” paperweights were market treasures found on a trip to India.

Practical Sophistication
Like many lucky enough to visit Paris, Rachel Mullee returned enamored with the City of Light.Today, Rachel has found a way to bring touches of the fame French style into her Minnesota home.

A bag from the famed French bakery Poilane in Paris is framed as art. “It’s not only beautiful but very meaningful.” The farmhouse sink is Rachel's favorite kitchen update. A palette of dusty blues introduces soft color to the table setting. Vintage linen napkins finish the elegant look. In the long and narrow master bedroom, Rachel makes space for the bed by skipping traditional nightstands and instead uses a diminutive shelf and wall lamp on one side and a small dressing table on the other. Rachel fashioned a pair of narrow shelves from long marble pieces. A narrow sideboard constructed from 2’x4’s and pine planks provides a work area and storage for stylish baskets with a small footprint. Ceramic water pitchers make chic flower vases without pretension. Cohesive tones and textures and plenty of light give a spacious feel to the small living room. The down-filled linen slipcover sofa was a $25 estate sale score. Fabric stretched over a canvas and framed French documents from the 1700s add subtle pattern to walls. End tables work double duty by offering hidden storage. Rachel turns unassuming architectural remnants into works of art with the help of white paint and clever unions. Here, an old window shutter and a cast-off mirror join forces to create a small, stylish and practical living room sideboard. Monochromatic bedding gets a boost with texture and patterns and bring interest and comfort to the small bedroom. Rather than re-model, the Mullers gave their kitchen “a facelift.” Stained maple cabinets were sanded and painted off-white at the top and a blue-grey at the bottom, brass knobs were switched-out for nickel, and doors were outfitted with glass to show off white dishes. A small dressing table doubles as a nightstand keeping books, flowers and a timepiece within reach. Most everything in the bathroom is original to the house simply freshened up with white paint and clip-on shades for the wall sconces; textiles usher in color.
A vintage armoire got a makeover with white paint and is now used to store bed linens, blankets, throws and other necessary items. Symmetry is created with a pair of identical chairs, wall sconces and baskets.
