La Dolce Vita
A chef falls for the rustic elegance and old-world heart of a historic Florida home and fills it with the welcoming comfort of his native Italy.

Adding to the kitchen’s rusticity, a hood encased in tiles and bricks tops the professional-grade stove and adds noteworthy character. From cookbooks to homemade treats, chef Maurizio is devoted to authenticity. A pair of gilded chairs upholstered in luxurious vintage silk and honey-toned drapes foster a sense of opulence. Golden walls and an arched opening elegantly frame the entrance to the living room. Silky fabrics in coordinating colors unite pillows of disparate shapes and patterns. A bouquet of sunflowers brings home the sun-drenched Italian countryside. With its warm tones, plaster walls, stones, bricks and tiles, the kitchen is a study in Tuscan style. Handcrafted Italian pitchers and plates share the limelight with ruby red glasses. A painting of coral hibiscus in a gilded frame reflects the local flora while echoing the room's dramatic color. Flanked by jeweled-color votives, a one-of-a kind antique Italian brass clock presides over the carved stone mantel.

Tropical Oasis
Withs colourful exterior, Key West-style architecture and it's tropical foliage, it's hard to miss the hideaway of East Coast designer and now full-time Florida resident Michele Mancini.

With its fruit-color walls and trim the kitchen sizzles The key to Michael's successful decorating strategy lies in her well-balanced imaginative arrangements, Hula figurines and tropical flowers and fabrics recall Havana and Hawaii. McCoy vases hold greenery collected from the garden. Unique lamps, animal prints and floral textiles give the living room its cozy tropical feel. Only the bedroom shows more restraint with its subdued palette. The narrow kitchen offers a convenient breakfast bar \. Antique frames showcase swatches of Michele's nostalgic designs.

French Finesse
When Kathy and Doug McCabe left a large home in a Dallas, Texas, gated community for a small cottage in the historic district of McKinney, both life and style changed.

In a corner of the guest bedroom, deep dormers make way for extra seating and storage. They’re topped with rafters for a loft look. Because odd wall angles can look choppy, Kathy painted the niche a serene blue. In the nursery, decorative items attest to Kathy's love for her grandchildren. Here, she selected an old iron topiary–like frame to showcase heirloom baby shoes. In the guest bedroom, Kathy displays favorite vintage items like old French books united by their faded pink covers. Because there’s very little pattern in the rest of the house, a room full of pattern is a pleasant surprise. In quintessential French style, black and white toile adds cottage character suited to the attic space without detracting from the home’s calming neutrality. Pairing a stylish vintage slipper bathtub with a cast iron garden chair and a scrolled patterned wallpaper with beadboard brings classic cottage elegance to the guest bathroom. In lieu of more conventional artwork a display of porcelain platters creates a contrast to the zinc canopy and a soft focal point. A small foyer opens into the living room through the original arch doorway that highlights the style of the front door. Kathy painted the nursery a rich buttercream for a warm color shift from other rooms, making it feel separate somehow, like a destination. An old wicker rocker and pillows made of vintage linens are timeless classics. Details matter to Kathy who prefers to show off fresh cut blooms in unique containers, like in this antique French pot. The symmetrical arrangement flanks the elegant fireplace and is anchored by a simple yet ample coffee table, which doesn’t visually weigh down the scheme. With its handprinted sign and ballet slippers, the door leading from the hallway to the guest room sets the tone for the inviting space. Kathy mixes wood pieces in a variety of natural finishes with metal ones that show a little age, and then ties everything together with a color scheme of gentle whites, dove gray and pale blue. An open kitchen can mean lost wall space for cupboards and appliances. But Kathy creatively repurposed a long, narrow sideboard that was originally open to the lower shelf but now has a center section with warming drawers.
