Louvered doors open into a guest bedroom. Obtained “as is” in the south of France, tapestry armchairs have a well-worn charm. Demijohns and crockery are country classics. Pure Palette
An art lover's retreat in upstate New York pairs modern art with salvage in a pristine setting.

A weathered coffee table and a vintage rug balances the more modern elements of the living room. A metal pig sculpture adds a whimsical touch. Above the hearth, black and white wall ceramics by potter Tim Clark create dramatic contrast. Homeowner Terry with her beloved French bulldog, Zoey. His and hers sinks make it easy to share a bathroom. Machinist stools surround a retro drafting table repurposed for casual dining. When a space has a neutral color scheme, even the most ordinary items stand out, such as vibrant veggies nestled in a galvanized tub. Plumped-up pillows and sumptuous paisley bedding give the bedroom and easy elegance.
Turkish rugs were bleached, cut up, and sewn together in patchwork fashion. Lavender, blues and oranges hues conjure the palette of the South of France. A butcher-block utility table with casters doubles as a rolling kitchen island and keeps everything within easy reach. A contemporary chandelier crafted from tiers of hand-strung translucent shells makes an airy counterpoint to the steel tabletop. Alongside the sofa, a midcentury sculptor’s pedestal table with rotating platform can be adjusted up or down. A horse portrait makes a bold statement along a simple board-and-batten wall. Beneath, a cast-iron pedestal console table anchors the vignette.

A faithful restoration brings authentic charm, a little drama and big comfort to a California farmhouse.

A rare 18th century statue of the angel Gabriel takes place of pride on the sideboard. Sarah is a master at combining traditional symmetry with a freer rustic style. A hutch holds items that reflect the couple’s affinity for nature and preference for earthy textures. The custom cabinetry was painted with chalk paint, and then burnished with a wax treatment. Sarah designed the range hood to go with the classic 1930s Wedgwood stove that came with the house The aged patina of the master bedroom's walls was created by a treatment that involves mixing paint with water and spraying it on wet plaster. Sarah creates collection by grouping pieces similar in style, shape, and color. A clock keeps watch over a European white mud beeskep and a colorful taxidermy Oversize carved wooden rosary beads spill out of a tarnished loving cup. In this case, an all-white kitchen gets little touches of colorful and rustic touches that keeps the mood light and homey. A patinated bucket filled with a soft throw demonstrates how contrasting elements can work in harmony. Pale blue walls make the bedroom feel like a heavenly oasis, A painting by Erin is one of her many large-scale artworks.

Free Range
For a California couple a move from California to a traditional Southern-style brick home with a barn on twelve acres in rural Kernersville inspires a new business venture.

With similar worn brown finishes, a cupboard and a modest table play the part of china cabinet and hutch. Roxy and Missy, the family rescued pets, enjoy much-deserved creature comforts. In its former life as a sunroom, this space awash with light was closed off from the rest of the house with French doors.Kathee and Charley Zurian removed those doors, and now the wide-open area is used as a living room. A mix of vintage pillows adds texture, pattern and a touches of color. A circa-1500s trunk with original hardware offers stylish storage. The iron clock is a foyer focal point that echoes a circular theme, which includes the architectural corbel below. The decor throughout the Zurian home is a balanced blend of rugged and pretty. Chipped finishes and coarse textures keep sweeter items such as pastel quilts in check. The vast dining room could easily feel cavernous, but instead it emits an intimate vibe thanks to large-scale pieces and natural objects that interrupt hard lines. The weathered zinc header above the bed used to be part of an old building in nearby Greensboro,North Carolina. By removing the French doors that once closed off the sunroom, Kathee created a visual connection that flows from one space to the next. The antique cabinet placed on an old workbench hosts ironstone, transferware and linens ready for use. Rather than use decorator’s tricks such as dark-colored walls to minimize large rooms, Kathee creates impressions of even more space by keeping walls light.Leaning architectural salvage infuses the master bedroom with weathered allure A baguette board keeps a row of apples in line atop a vintage Swiss Army blanket used as a runner; French enamelware bowls punctuate the warm tones of the room. A gilded tole chandelier and bed outfitted with black-and- white ticking and toile impart a French- countryside sensibility to the guest bedroom.
