Pure Palette
An art lover's retreat in upstate New York pairs modern art with salvage in a pristine setting.

Turkish rugs were bleached, cut up, and sewn together in patchwork fashion. Alongside the sofa, a midcentury sculptor’s pedestal table with rotating platform can be adjusted up or down. Homeowner Terry with her beloved French bulldog, Zoey. A contemporary chandelier crafted from tiers of hand-strung translucent shells makes an airy counterpoint to the steel tabletop. Lavender, blues and oranges hues conjure the palette of the South of France. Above the hearth, black and white wall ceramics by potter Tim Clark create dramatic contrast. When a space has a neutral color scheme, even the most ordinary items stand out, such as vibrant veggies nestled in a galvanized tub. Plumped-up pillows and sumptuous paisley bedding give the bedroom and easy elegance.
His and hers sinks make it easy to share a bathroom. Machinist stools surround a retro drafting table repurposed for casual dining. A horse portrait makes a bold statement along a simple board-and-batten wall. Beneath, a cast-iron pedestal console table anchors the vignette. A butcher-block utility table with casters doubles as a rolling kitchen island and keeps everything within easy reach. A weathered coffee table and a vintage rug balances the more modern elements of the living room. A metal pig sculpture adds a whimsical touch.

No Place Like Home
Purposeful and meaningful pieces united disparate styles that give a small apartment a big dose of charm.

The apartment’s tall ceilings can accommodate the tufted shelter bed with footboard. The neutral palette of linens is kept lively with the variety of textures. Textures and whimsical touches keep the all-white dining room interesting. An old medical cabinet keeps tableware handy.
A marigold throw adds a bold stroke of pigment against the brick wall. In lieu of nightstands, Melissa uses a pair of logs that have rayed with time. Metal letters spell the family’s name. Melisa’s grandmother’s wood bowl, renewed with some sanding, makes a handy vessel for chunky knit washcloths and a bath brush. Subway tile with dark gray grout and glass block make every day feel like a stay at a boutique hotel. The shelving turned sideboard offers a display area for showcasing an ever-changing array of items.
The James’ busy little kitchen appears more airy than cramped thanks to sleek fixtures, bright blue walls and a 12-foot window. A weathered crate shows off delicate hydrangeas and chamomile blossoms. Melisa had an old commercial baker’s rack reconstructed to half its size by her welder; she added barnwood shelves and kept the casters. Though small, the bathroom is replete with modern updates. When Melisa spied the shelving unit at a junkyard, she knew she’d found the piece she needed the size and color were perfect for her living room. A Belgian grain sack with its seams removed runs along the farmhouse table. A giant clock constructed from a bistro tabletop rounds out the gallery wall.

Bold and Beautiful
A traditional home gets a lively makeover with gemstone hues, offbeat art, and quirky accents.

Shimmering mercury glasses and votive add touch of glamour the bathroom In the dining room, an exotic rug sets off the dark wicker chairs. By keeping things simple and livable, the Fidels have created a space that feels real, not contrived. Striped towels and zigzag rainbow rug add zip to an all-white bath. In a neutral space like this, it’s easy to dramatically change out the look of the room simply by playing with the accessories.
An artisan-made light fixture incorporating natural wood and shells replaced a formal chandelier in the dining room. Even when not in use on the table, the glasses earn their keep as striking objects lined up on shelves The living room cocktail table offers a spacious staging area for a pink dominoes box, stacks of books and other favorite items. A collection of shimmering crystals lines a console that is part mantel, part table. The focal point in Kathi and Ray Fidel's foyer is a 5-foot-high mixed-media collage created by California artist James Verbicky using international currency.
When they redecorated, the Fidels kept their old sofa but spiced it up with pillows and throws. The lamps’ black shades harmonize with the deep-toned armchairs nearby. Mixing patchwork quilts and brightly patterned pillows creates a“collected over time” look. A teal blue glass chandelier adds an unexpected dash of color up high. A bunny painting inspired the room’s palette. In the master bedroom, a graceful arched raffia-upholstered headboard frames a collection of striped and lattice-look pillows. A fringed, patterned rug brings art underfoot. A butteRfly portrait was the inspiration for the guest bedroom. The romantic white cane bed featuring hand carved details has a decidedly feminine air.

East Coast meet West Coast
Classic New England furniture finds a new life and a new home in a California farmhouse.

The kitchen eating area shines with the simplicity of the antique Windsor chairs and Shaker table. The quartet of light pendants has a vintage feel with a modern twist.
The space adjacent to the dining room was originally meant to be a wine room. However, it wasn’t temperature controlled so Linda and Neal made it into a handsome and practical bar cleverly outfitted with a built-in credenza and shelves. Both areas of the open living space are clearly defined by their own color scheme yet easily flow from one to the other thanks to unifying warm woods and cool white accents. Uniting modern white cabinetry with the graphic black hood and island gives the kitchen a sophisticated contemporary farmhouse style. The brass chandelier, which came with the house, is in sync with the sleek design. “We talked about painting out the family room black fireplace, but Neal never wavered. He liked the masculine contrast to the pale colors-creating an interesting tension and edginess.” The designer recalls. By changing the pillows and refreshing the wooden frame chairs cushion fabric, the good bones of all the pieces continue to perform perfectly. The stainless leather ottoman adds a lighter more modern touch. The white cotton slipcovers on the sofas are over 10 years old. Gold fittings add a touch of luxury to the soaking tub. The pure white and simplicity of the setting confers a spa-like mood of the master bathroom. A dog portrait by one of Linda’s favorite artists, William Wegman, famous for his photographs and paintings of Weimaraner dogs, stands guard above a stack of little wooden trunks. The antique dining room table that once belonged in a French bakery and the Shaker-style white woven chairs, assembled by Neal from a kit many years ago, have followed the couple from house to house. “Luckily, many of the pieces we bought years ago have withstood the test of time,” Linda notes. The Sputnik-style chandelier casts a retro-modern glow. Of her pottery, Linda says she collects based on how a piece makes her feel. It’s evident that many have struck a favorable chord. “I have so many, so I rotate them!” She admits. “Some of the items remain together but installed in a new pattern.”Another favorite still life by Janet Rickus adds a vibrant note to the space.
The black fireplace wall in the master bedroom sitting area, another feature original to the home, adds a graphic punch and dynamism to the subdued palette. The sofa and chair have been reupholstered and a new textural rug added to soften the sleek coffee table. The living room welcomes with its crisp blue and white palette. Shiplap and wood paneling instill a relax mood while modern light pendants inject a touch of modernity to the otherwise classic furnishings. A pair of ottoman adds structure and extra seating to the room. “We treated the antique pieces like sculpture, silhouetting them against the bright shiplap and paneling so they would stand out,” explains designer Janet Lohman. A bench from Thomas Moser and artwork by William Wegman conspire to make a quiet yet elegant statement in the entryway.

Common Threads
DIY maverick Kate Keesee furnishes her SoCal home on a shoestring proving that you don't need a lot of money to have a fabulous and comfortable home.

Kate built the rustic coffee table from a piece of wood she found on the side of the curb, it gets its full-bodied color from layers of staining, distressing, and burning techniques. In the eating area small round table allows for everyday meals. Narrow handmade wood shelves and a makeshift ladder supply clever storage. A small ladder is at once useful and charming as both a place to hold a quilt and hat while also serving as humble wall decor. Macramé is a common thread throughout Kate’s decor; inexpensive and relatively simple to make by knotting string in patterns, it fills walls with an organic, homespun quality
The headboard was built using leftover scrap fence wood and made tall enough to accommodate standing pillows and a framed picture. A small table keeps inspiring books handy for bedtime reading. Objects with patina and meaning pair well with frilly greenery along the mantel. A handmade dream-catcher confers a sanctuary vive to the guest bedroom. A leather pillow brings a rustic note to the delicate bedroom setting. Handmade macrame hanging from a salvage piece of wood. Nearly everything shown in the neutral-based living room was either sourced at the Goodwill or assembled from salvaged wood. Kate constructed the sliding wood door from old fence slats. A macramé hanging is unexpected and flirty as a backdrop to workaday kitchen tools. A simple found desk freshened with white paint and a Mexican Equipale barrel-style chair draped in macramé create small office space in the living room. Appreciation for Western culture is on display and includes a favorite print framed using reclaimed wood. Baskets, lamp, and bench textiles contribute to the cozy spot's appeal.
