When their children went off to college, Susan and Bob Fisher decided to return to their roots. They traded in their 5,700 square foot self-build on the edge of Sag Harbour, New York, for a more modest home in the centre of the charming village itself. “We originally lived in this part of town, but as our family grew we decided we needed more space, and so moved to a larger home on the outskirts,” recalls Susan. “But we really missed the village life, so when the time came, we started looking in this area.”
After a month of house hunting, the Fishers happened upon a quaint little cottage, just one room wide, which had been built by its previous owners in a style that would blend with the area’s architecture. “It was on a narrow plot, tucked in between historic period houses, and meant that our commute to work would be a gentle stroll down tree-lined streets, just two blocks to downtown Sag Harbor and our home furnishings emporium,” Susan smiles. “We knew it was the place for us – although we also knew that we would want to remodel the space.”
