‘We start our celebrations on Christmas Eve with schnapps and a splendid Christmas lunch - the famous Swedish " smörgåsbord " with dishes such as ham, meatballs, gravadlax and Jansson’s Temptation a lovely dish of creamy potatoes onions butter and anchovies. This is followed by risgrynsgröt a rice porridge made with cream, sugar and cinnamon. A whole almond is hidden in the porridge and whoever finds the almond can have a wish. After our meal when it gets dark, someone dresses up as ‘Tomte’, the Swedish Father Christmas, in red robes and flowing white beard and brings presents for the children who leave a dish of porridge for him.’
