This is Hastings ‘Old Town’ quarter, and here, amongst the narrow, winding streets, along hidden flagstone lanes and down steeply stepped secret passageways, buildings from the medieval period to the Victorian, in a pot-pourri of varying of architectural styles, jostling together as if vying for attention.
Right at the very heart of this Dickensian tumble of houses and pubs, brick-a-brac and antique shops is Swan House, the home of two relative new comers to this enchantingly quirky little area of the southeastern shore; Brendan McDonagh and Lionel Copley.
Situated opposite a 14th century church on the corner of a street that curves away in a sharpening incline, Brendan and Lionel’s new property is one of the area’s shining jewels, a beautifully half-timbered Tudor house dating from 1490. But as the pair admit, they may not ever have re-located to Hastings had it not been for the happy accident of the south coast’s sometimes inclement weather - and a bit of flagrant gate-crashing.
